ShellFischer-Tropsch based Technology Pathways for Decarbonizing and Defossilizing the Future Energy System
Abstract:
The talk will focus on how integrated Fischer-Tropsch technology (also known as Gas-to-Liquids, or GTL, technology) could be applied for making 1) Lower Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF) via Blue GTL, 2) advanced bio-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (advanced bio-SAF) via BTL (Biomass-to-Liquids) and 3) synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF) via PTL (Power-to-Liquids). Also, hybrid solutions will be discussed, for instance BTL/PTL could offer a sweet spot for combined production of e-fuels and advanced biofuels, while Blue GTL process could be transitioned over time to PTL or BTL(/PTL).

Dr. Svetlana van Bavel is a Senior Process Engineer working on technology solutions for low-carbon fuels (such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel) at Shell Global Solutions International B.V., in particular solutions based on Fischer-Tropsch technology (also known as Gas-to-Liquids technology) applied to a wide range of feedstocks, including biomass, non-recyclable waste, renewable power, renewable hydrogen and CO2. Before joining Shell in 2010, Svetlana obtained a PhD (cum laude) in Organic Photovoltaics and an MSc (cum laude) in Chemical technology, both from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
Svetlana is passionate about the Energy Transition in a broad sense, including techno-economic evaluations of various technology pathways, understanding the impact of policies and regulations (like EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), ReFuelEU Aviation and others) and impact of consumer choices. In her spare time, Svetlana enjoys reading (especially psychology and philosophy) and power walking.
